More on the Dance with Business Cognate major
Are you passionate about dance and also interested in the world of business? The Bachelor of Arts in Dance with Business Cognate offers a unique opportunity to combine these two fields. This comprehensive dance degree program provides a broad learning experience in various dance styles, including ballet, modern, tap, and jazz, while also incorporating essential business acumen.
The curriculum is built around core dance coursework such as choreography, dance history, pedagogy, and physical analysis. This blend of artistic and business education prepares graduates for diverse career paths. You might find yourself managing a dance studio, pursuing graduate studies in arts administration, dance history, physical or dance therapy, or even dance ethnology. Teaching in private studios is another viable and rewarding option for graduates of this dance degree.
Admission into the dance program starts with a probationary first year, granted only through audition. Progressing through the levels of dance techniques requires consistent achievement. A “B+” grade or higher is needed for advancement from Ballet IV to VIII, and a “B” or better in all other technique classes.
To officially enter the BA program in Dance within the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration, students must successfully complete their probationary first year. This includes demonstrating strong work habits, passing the Freshman Jury and Interview, and maintaining a GPA of 2.785 or higher in all dance courses. Continuous enrollment in a dance technique class each semester is mandatory until all technique requirements are fulfilled. For the BA in Dance Studies with a Business Cognate, completion of two semesters of Ballet V is a specific requirement.
The following information is officially endorsed by The School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration and The Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences and serves as a helpful guide. However, official degree requirements are determined upon transfer and admission to the degree-granting college. Students should always refer to their Degree Progress Report (Stellic), which is the definitive source for graduation requirements. Please note that completing this dance degree within the typical timeframe depends on various factors, including course availability, credit load, work commitments, finances, family responsibilities, course drops or withdrawals, successful course completion, and prerequisite requirements. The transfer process is facilitated through meetings with your academic advisor.
Accelerated Three-Year Option: Highly motivated first-time students who have already earned credits equivalent to at least the first year of coursework may be eligible for an accelerated three-year option. Credits can be earned through strong scores on Advanced Placement (AP) exams or through College Credit Plus Program (CCP) courses. The specific credit awarded for AP scores or CCP courses is determined by the relevant academic department and may vary based on exam scores or course grades. Credit may also be obtained through examination or placement tests where applicable.
