Over the weekend, amidst the excitement of playoff football and women’s basketball, an equally captivating competition unfolded: the National Championship for cheer and dance. For those tuning in, like myself, for the first time, the athleticism and artistry on display were truly impressive, especially from the Ohio State Dance Team.
Ohio State’s dance program has solidified its position as a national powerhouse in recent years. Their consistent success speaks volumes, with at least one national championship title secured in five of the last six years. Last year was particularly remarkable, as they brought home an astounding three titles. This year, continuing their legacy, the Ohio State Dance Team 2024 once again demonstrated their dominance.
College dance competitions, as even seasoned dancers admit, can have intricate scoring systems. However, the primary categories include jazz, pom, hip-hop, and gameday performances. Schools are further categorized into D1A (FBS programs) and D1 (FCS). Ohio State competes at the highest level in the D1A division.
This year, the Buckeyes earned the coveted first-place prize for their mesmerizing jazz performance. The routine was a masterclass in choreography, creativity, and difficulty. Judges evaluate a multitude of factors, including the dancers’ emotional connection with the audience through their expressions, the precision of movement execution, synchronization, and the overall impact of the performance.
The Ohio State Dance Team 2024 jazz routine achieved an impressive score of 98.9206, surpassing the University of Minnesota, who scored 98.4286 for second place. Minnesota’s jazz routine was also exceptionally beautiful, and it’s worth acknowledging the incredible talent showcased by both teams. The dedication and skill required to perform at this level are undeniable.
While the Buckeyes triumphed in jazz, the pom category saw the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers take the lead, with Ohio State securing a respectable second place. Minnesota’s pom routine scored 98.4762, while Ohio State achieved 97.7143.
The synchronized movements and the mid-routine costume change in Minnesota’s pom performance were particularly noteworthy, highlighting the exceptional standards at the national level.
Adding to the Buckeyes’ accolades, the Ohio State spirit team, encompassing the cheer and dance squads along with Brutus Buckeye, also claimed a national title. This solidified Ohio State as double champions this past weekend, showcasing their all-around spirit program excellence.
The Ohio State Dance Team 2024 and the entire spirit program exemplify incredible strength, unwavering concentration, and remarkable unity. Their consistent championship wins are a testament to their hard work and dedication, making them a team that Buckeye fans can wholeheartedly support and celebrate.
