Working at 6 Points Creative Arts Academy presented unexpected opportunities, including embracing early morning gym sessions during staff week. This personal fitness journey inspired the introduction of exciting physical activities for campers, with a focus on bringing the energy of Zumba Dance Zumba to both Bonim and Olim units throughout the summer. The goal was to create an engaging and inclusive environment where every camper could experience the joy of movement.

Initially, the plan was to launch a traditional Zumba-style dance class. However, the first sessions revealed different preferences among the age groups. Bonim campers enthusiastically embraced “Musical Dance Party,” especially when incorporating lively musical theatre show tunes. This age group thrived on the expressive and theatrical aspects of dance. In contrast, Olim campers showed a greater interest in more conventional physical activities. They were drawn to options like “walk and talk on the track,” soccer, and tennis, indicating a preference for structured sports and outdoor activities.
Recognizing these varied interests, the kinesthetic art program adapted to meet the campers’ needs. For the Olim unit, this meant introducing tennis and soccer sessions as regular offerings. Campers who brought tennis racquets from home were thrilled to have dedicated time to use them, and many campers discovered a newfound passion for soccer. The program became more diverse, catering to different energy levels and athletic inclinations.

For the Bonim campers, the “Musical Dance Party” evolved into a unique kinesthetic art form. It became a platform for campers to share their favorite musical theatre dances with each other. This collaborative approach culminated in impressive musical mash-up performances. A highlight was the first performance of “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from “Hairspray” at the end of Shabbat services, a moment that showcased the campers’ enthusiasm and talent. Building on this success, a second performance featured Broadway dances, including original choreography created by the Bonim campers themselves, demonstrating their growing confidence and creativity.

Whether a seasoned dancer or a beginner, a soccer pro or a novice, all campers at URJ 6 Points Creative Arts are encouraged to explore new experiences in kinesthetic arts. Beyond learning tennis techniques or dance moves like the “swim pivot” and the “Jitterbug,” the true value lies in fostering creativity through exploration and curiosity. The camp environment inspires campers to get active and moving through a wide array of engaging activities. And for the staff, it’s a bonus to share in the energetic atmosphere and even get some extra cardio while promoting fun and fitness.
