Being part of the UNCW Dance Team is more than just joining a dance group; it’s about immersing yourself in the electrifying atmosphere of college sports. Imagine performing in front of thousands of passionate fans, feeling the roar of the student body as they cheer on Seahawk basketball. As a member of this esteemed team, you’ll perform at every home game in Trask Coliseum for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Unlike some Wilmington dance clubs that focus on competition, the UNCW Dance Team is non-competitive, channeling its energy into boosting student engagement and spirit across all Seahawk athletics. The team fosters a close-knit community for students who share a deep passion for dance and the excitement of college sports.

Requirements to Join this Wilmington Dance Club

What does it take to become a Seahawk dancer? The team seeks individuals who not only possess strong dance skills but also embody the Seahawk spirit. The ideal dancer is someone who radiates enthusiasm for Seahawk athletics, brings vibrant energy to every performance, and upholds a positive image for the team. While tumbling skills and complex turn sequences aren’t mandatory, solid basic technique is essential. This includes demonstrating clean double turns, leaps, and high kicks. More importantly, the coaches look for dancers with an upbeat and professional attitude who can positively represent the Seahawks both on and off the court. Many team members successfully balance dance team commitments with jobs or sorority involvement, highlighting the team’s supportive environment. However, it’s crucial to prioritize dance team activities, ensuring you can effectively manage your time between practices, games, and other commitments. Work or Greek Life events are generally not considered valid excuses for missing Dance Team events, practices, or games, reflecting the dedication expected from members of this Wilmington dance club.

Navigating Tryouts for this Wilmington Dance Club

Tryouts for this prominent Wilmington dance club typically occur in mid-to-late August. Keep an eye on the official website and Instagram page for the most up-to-date information as the fall semester approaches. It’s important to note that team selection is based purely on tryout performance, with seniority playing no role. Returning team members must re-audition each year to secure their spot. The tryout process spans two days, designed to assess different aspects of your dance ability and performance quality.

Day one focuses on individual artistry and choreography. Prospective dancers are required to present a self-choreographed routine with specific elements:

  • A four-count eight sequence of choreography set to music of your choice. This allows you to showcase your personal style and musicality.
  • Inclusion of at least one clean turn. Demonstrating your technical proficiency in turns is essential.
  • Incorporation of at least one clean leap. Leaps are another key element to display your technique and control.
  • A strong representation of your performance skills as expected on the court. Judges will be looking for energy, stage presence, and the ability to engage an audience.

Day two shifts focus to the specific technique skills utilized during performances at Trask Coliseum. This may involve learning a short halftime routine to assess your ability to pick up choreography quickly and perform in a team setting. You might also practice sidelines or cheers, evaluating your energy and ability to engage with the spirit aspects of the team. Across-the-floor exercises may be used to further assess your general dance technique and control.

Expectations as a Member of this Wilmington Dance Club

Successful candidates joining this Wilmington dance club can expect a structured and rewarding schedule. Practices are held in Hanover Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-9:30pm. Attendance at all practices is mandatory for every team member. It’s essential to align your academic schedule to accommodate these practice times. Shortly after team selection, all dancers must attend a mandatory weekend clinic (official dates to be announced on the website). This clinic is crucial as it’s where the team learns all the choreography, cheers, and sidelines for the entire season. Your attendance is mandatory as this intensive clinic lays the foundation for all performances. During the basketball season, dancers are required to perform at ALL men’s AND women’s home games. Again, work and Greek Life events are not considered excused absences for game performances. The team also performs at the exciting fall kickoff event—Midnight Madness, adding another performance opportunity to your schedule.

CAA Tournament Participation for Select Dancers

A highlight for some members of this Wilmington dance club is the opportunity to travel with the basketball team to the CAA conference tournament during spring break. Selection for the CAA tournament team is based on merit and a variety of factors, ensuring a fair and unbiased process. The selection criteria include:

  • Consistent work ethic demonstrated during weekly practices. Dedication and commitment are highly valued.
  • Energetic and engaging performances on game day. Game day presence and performance quality are key.
  • Good sportsmanship and positive attitude towards teammates throughout the season. Teamwork and a positive attitude are essential for team cohesion.
  • An overall wholesome and outgoing demeanor towards fans during events. Representing the team positively both on and off the court is important.

CAA tournament team selection will be finalized by the end of January. This selection process is not based on seniority, ensuring fairness for all team members. It’s advised to refrain from making spring break travel plans until after the CAA selection process is complete. If selected for the CAA tournament team, attendance is mandatory (travel expenses will be covered). Dancers not selected for CAA will then be free to make their spring break plans. Further details regarding the CAA tournament will be provided as the date approaches.
