However, change is being championed by individuals like Devin Mallory, a trailblazer who made history as the first male dancer to join the celebrated Ucla Dance Team. From Mascot to Groundbreaker: The Path to UCLA Dance Team
Devin’s journey with UCLA Spirit Squad began unconventionally as Joe Bruin, the university’s beloved mascot. His dance background proved invaluable in this role, opening doors to unique performance opportunities. “As Joe Bruin, my dance skills allowed me to engage with fellow mascots on game days and even perform alongside the UCLA Dance Team,” Devin recounts. These experiences culminated in an invitation to perform with the dance team, not as Joe Bruin, but as himself, Devin Mallory. This pivotal moment ignited his ambition to become a full-fledged member. Fueled by the team’s support and his own passion, Devin set his sights on auditioning for a coveted spot.
Historically, while male dancers had auditioned for the UCLA Dance Team before, none had successfully made the cut. Understanding this context, Devin, as a BIPOC male dancer, approached the audition with unwavering self-belief. “I went into the audition with 100% confidence that I belonged on the team,” he states, a testament to his determination and talent.
Performing on Prominent Stages: From UCLA to National Television
Since shattering barriers as the first male member of the UCLA Dance Team, Devin has graced numerous prestigious stages. He has performed at iconic venues like UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion and The Rose Bowl, captivating audiences with his dynamic routines. Beyond these local stages, Devin’s talent has shone brightly on national television, with appearances on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Inside Edition, Good Morning America, and Spectrum. He also recalls recording at the renowned UCLA John Wooden Fitness Center, further solidifying his presence within the university’s athletic and performance sphere.
Reflecting on his experiences, Devin highlights his first game performance at the Rose Bowl as a particularly memorable moment. “Running onto the field for that first game, feeling empowered, and executing routines we had trained for months to perfect was incredible,” he shares, emphasizing the dedication and teamwork that underpin their performances.
Inspiration and Inclusivity in Dance
Devin’s captivating performances, particularly a viral dance to “Smooth Criminal,” have drawn comparisons to legendary figures like Michael Jackson. While humbled by such comparisons, Devin draws inspiration from a wide range of sources. “I find inspiration from those around me,” he explains, “everyone embodies a unique authenticity that I strive to incorporate into my own movement.” He specifically names Misty Copeland and Roslyn Warby as key inspirations, admiring their exceptional body control and their embodiment of inclusivity, a value central to Devin’s dance philosophy.
Addressing the slower progress of inclusivity in sports and college dance compared to professional and club dance scenes, Devin points to the deeply ingrained male dominance in athletics. “Sports and college stages have faced challenges in becoming more inclusive due to the overall male-dominated nature of the athletic world,” he states. “Having a male dancer on the field or court challenges traditional ideas of masculinity, and unfortunately, very few dance styles easily align with outdated notions of toxic masculinity.”
Overcoming Negativity and Championing Representation
Navigating negative reactions is an inevitable part of breaking new ground. Devin candidly shares his past struggles with negativity: “For a long time, I struggled to dismiss the negative reactions; they started to define my self-perception.” His turning point came with a conscious shift in focus. “I redirected my attention to my loved ones and supporters, prioritizing the positive affirmations over the negativity.”
Looking ahead, Devin emphasizes that fostering inclusivity and representation in dance is a gradual process. “Inclusivity and representation won’t happen overnight,” he acknowledges. However, he believes in the power of individual empowerment. “When individuals find strength in their passions and unique qualities, they create opportunities to be seen and heard.” Devin’s message is about agency and authenticity: “While we can’t control how others perceive us, pursuing our most authentic selves, regardless of external reactions, will inspire and potentially drive change.”

Devin’s aspirations extend beyond personal success. “I hope to embody authenticity and contribute to creating a space where others feel empowered to pursue their true selves, both within and beyond the dance world,” he concludes.
