Tilian Pearson and Dance Gavin Dance Part Ways: A New Chapter for Both

Dance Gavin Dance, a prominent name in the post-hardcore scene, has announced the departure of their long-time clean vocalist, Tilian Pearson. After a significant 12-year tenure with the band, Pearson and Dance Gavin Dance have decided to move in separate directions, marking a new chapter for both the artist and the group.

Pearson joined Dance Gavin Dance in 2012, stepping in after Jonny Craig’s second departure. His arrival marked a significant era for the band, contributing his distinctive vocals to six studio albums that have become staples in their discography. These albums include fan favorites such as “Acceptance Speech,” “Instant Gratification,” “Mothership,” “Artificial Selection,” “Afterburner,” and “Jackpot Juicer.” His melodic voice became integral to the band’s signature sound, blending with the heavier elements of their post-hardcore style.

The news was officially shared by Dance Gavin Dance via an Instagram statement from the remaining band members – Jon Mess, Will Swan, Matt Mingus, and Andrew Wells. The statement conveyed that the parting was a mutual decision rooted in creative differences. It read, “We thank him for his years of friendship and contribution during his time in Dance Gavin Dance. As people grow and change, creative differences can arise and life paths and goals may no longer align.” This amicable tone suggests a respectful parting, acknowledging Pearson’s valuable contributions over the years.

Tilian Pearson also addressed the separation in his own Instagram post, confirming his exit from Dance Gavin Dance and outlining his future plans. He expressed enthusiasm for embarking on a solo career under the moniker “Tilian.” Pearson stated, “Now It’s time for a new chapter. I will be focusing on making new music on a different canvas. I’m currently in the studio perfecting a new Tilian album and will be playing live shows to support it later this year.” This announcement signals Pearson’s commitment to continuing his musical journey as a solo artist, promising new music and live performances for his fans. His previous solo work includes the album “Factory Reset” released in 2021, indicating an established path in his solo endeavors.

It’s worth noting that Pearson had previously stepped away from Dance Gavin Dance in June 2022 amidst allegations of sexual misconduct and struggles with substance abuse. Following treatment and addressing these issues, he was welcomed back into the band in November 2022. His return was followed by the band completing their tour for the “Jackpot Juicer” album in November 2023 and releasing their last single with Pearson, “War Machine,” in October 2023.

The departure of Tilian Pearson marks the end of an era for Dance Gavin Dance. As both Dance Gavin Dance and Tilian Pearson venture into new territories, fans are keenly watching to see what the future holds for both the band and the vocalist as they navigate their respective musical paths.
