Relive the iconic scenes that captured hearts worldwide – the watermelon carry, those sultry dance moves, the unforgettable lake lift, and the electric final dance where nobody could keep Baby in the corner. Dirty Dancing, though set in the fictional Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills during the summer of 1963, found its real-world backdrop in the stunning landscapes of North Carolina. Today, you can immerse yourself in the romance and nostalgia by embarking on a memorable trip to explore the original film locations of this beloved love story, right in Lake Lure, NC.
Day 1: Step into the Story at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa
Begin your ‘Dirty Dancing’ journey in the charming town of Lake Lure, North Carolina, where several key scenes from the movie were brought to life. Your perfect basecamp? The historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, which hosted Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Johnny Castle and Frances “Baby” Houseman themselves, during the filming. For an extra touch of movie magic, consider settling into Johnny’s Cabin or Baby’s Bungalow, both specially themed to celebrate the film and offering spacious comfort.
While the Inn itself wasn’t a filming location, the nearby Camp Chimney Rock provided the quintessential Kellerman’s atmosphere. Its original cabins, dining hall, and gymnasium were transformed into the movie’s staff quarters and the grand banquet room where Baby and Johnny delivered their breathtaking “Time of My Life” performance. Today, this area is the private residential community of Firefly Cove at Lake Lure, carefully incorporating the remaining vestiges of the camp into its design.
As evening approaches, indulge in a delightful dinner at the Inn’s Veranda Restaurant. Savor an elegant meal accompanied by breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, setting the stage for your ‘Dirty Dancing’ adventure.
Day 2: Elevated Romance at Chimney Rock and Dancing History at The Esmeralda Inn
A short drive west will lead you to Chimney Rock State Park, home to the majestic 535-million-year-old Chimney Rock. Ascend to the top of this 315-foot natural wonder. For the energetic, the Outcroppings Trail offers a rewarding climb of nearly 500 steps. Alternatively, check if the park’s elevator is operational for a quicker ride, followed by a short final climb to the summit. Reaching the top rewards you with spectacular vistas across the Blue Ridge Mountains – the perfect spot to recreate Johnny and Baby’s mountain-top romantic moments, especially if you time your visit for a magical sunset.

Continue your journey west to The Esmeralda Inn, Restaurant & Spa. Here, you can literally walk on the very floor where Baby and Johnny practiced and performed their iconic dance and lift in Dirty Dancing‘s finale. Though not originally located at The Esmeralda, this piece of movie history was rescued from the demolished gymnasium in the late 1980s and incorporated into the Inn’s lobby floor during a renovation in the late 1990s. Enjoy a delicious dinner at the Esmeralda Restaurant, known for its commitment to local ingredients and impressive wine selections. (Please note that The Esmeralda Inn is currently closed for renovations throughout 2023.)
Day 3: Lake Lure’s Charms and Golf Course Memories
Spend your morning soaking in the ambiance of the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa. Admire the Inn’s antique furnishings and artwork, take a peaceful stroll around the grounds and lakeside, or pamper yourself with a rejuvenating treatment at the Irongate Spa. Afterwards, head to the marina and embark on a guided Dirty Dancing tour with Lake Lure Tours. Board an open-air pontoon boat for a narrated journey across the lake. You’ll glide past the famous stairs where Baby carried that watermelon to the staff cabins and where she practiced her dance steps. You’ll also see the Firefly Cove area, the site of the former Camp Chimney Rock, which served as Kellerman’s staff housing and banquet hall in the film. Throughout the tour, you’ll learn about the rich history of the area and the natural beauty of Hickory Nut Gorge.
In the afternoon, take a scenic drive along the lake to Bald Mountain Golf Course, an 18-hole course at Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure. Designed in 1968 by W.B. Lewis, this course played a role in Dirty Dancing when Baby interrupted her parents’ golf practice to ask her father for money. Filming took place on the 16th hole, cleverly disguised as a practice green for the movie scene.
Bonus Day: The Musical’s Locations
For the ultimate Dirty Dancing immersion, extend your trip southwest to Hendersonville and Cashiers. These towns provided backdrops for the 2017 musical reimagining of Dirty Dancing. Consider a stay at the newly renovated High Hampton, which served as Kellerman’s Resort in this updated film version.
