At College of the Canyons, we are committed to providing high-quality dance education to our students. As a Dance Instructor, you will play a pivotal role in shaping their artistic journey, fostering their technical skills, and nurturing their appreciation for the art of dance. This is a fantastic opportunity to share your knowledge and experience, working with motivated students in a supportive and dynamic academic setting.
What it Takes to Become a Dance Instructor at College of the Canyons
To be considered for these rewarding jobs as dance instructors, candidates must meet specific qualifications that demonstrate their expertise and readiness to teach at the college level. The minimum requirements are designed to ensure our instructors possess both practical dance experience and a strong academic foundation.
Required Qualifications:
-
California Community College Instructor Credential: Possession of an unexpired California Community College Instructor Credential in Dance. This credential validates your qualifications to teach in the California Community College system.
-
Educational Degrees: Alternatively, candidates may qualify with the following degrees:
- Master’s degree in Dance, Physical Education with a dance emphasis, or Theater with dance emphasis. This advanced degree signifies a deep understanding of dance theory and practice.
- Bachelor’s degree in one of the aforementioned fields AND a Master’s degree in Physical Education, any Life Science, Physiology, Theater Arts, Kinesiology, Humanities, Performing Arts, or Music. This combination demonstrates a breadth of knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding.
-
Equivalent Qualifications: We also recognize equivalent qualifications for exceptional candidates who may not hold the degrees listed above. This includes:
- A Master’s degree in any field from an accredited institution, coupled with official transcripts showcasing the successful completion of 24 semester units in dance at the upper division and graduate level. Importantly, at least 12 of these units must be at the graduate level, ensuring advanced study in the discipline.
Important Considerations for Applicants:
- Meeting the minimum qualifications is essential, but it does not guarantee an interview. Hiring committees carefully review all complete and qualified application packets to select the most suitable candidates.
- As part of the interview process, candidates may be asked to conduct a teaching demonstration. This allows us to assess your teaching style and effectiveness in a practical setting.
- Please note that equivalency requirements can evolve over time. If you are applying based on equivalent qualifications, your credentials will be evaluated against the established minimum qualifications or department equivalencies in place at the time of hiring.
