Inferno Dance Competition: Understanding Awards and Scoring

Inferno Dance Competition provides a comprehensive and adjudicated awards system, ensuring every routine receives recognition. Scores and audio critiques from our experienced judges are available via DanceCompGenie within one week post-competition. Studio owners will receive an email prior to each event detailing how to access these valuable resources.

Adjudicated Awards: Scoring System Explained

Every performance at Inferno Dance Competition is adjudicated, meaning it receives an award based on a points-based scoring system. This system is designed to recognize the hard work and talent of each dancer and routine. Here’s a breakdown of our adjudicated award levels:

  • Titanium: 297 – 300 pts. (Exceptional Performance)
  • Elite Platinum: 290 – 296.9 pts. (Outstanding Performance)
  • Platinum: 285 – 289.9 pts. (Superior Performance)
  • High Gold: 280 – 284.9 pts. (Excellent Performance)
  • Gold: 279.9 pts. & Below (Strong Performance)

High Score Awards: Recognizing Top Routines

In addition to adjudicated awards, Inferno Dance Competition recognizes the highest-scoring routines within each level and age group. These High Score awards celebrate exceptional performances across various categories, including:

  • Solos
  • Duos/Trios
  • Small Groups
  • Large Groups
  • Lines
  • Mini-Musicals
  • Productions (if applicable)

Please note that levels and age groups may be combined depending on registration numbers at each event, at the discretion of Inferno Dance. In the event of a tie, the on-site judging panel will determine the winner. To ensure fair competition, dancers cannot compete against themselves in the same category and age group within the Solo division. Solo dancers are eligible for a High Score placement only once per category. For Duos/Trios, participation in the same category and age group is permitted if at least 50% of the dancers are different, maintaining the integrity of the competition.

The number of High Score awards distributed is determined by the number of routines within each level, age group, and routine size category:

  • 1 – 3 routines: 1 Winner
  • 4 – 5 routines: 1 Winner, 1 Runner-Up
  • 6 – 8 routines: 1 Winner, 2 Runners-Up
  • 9 – 13 routines: 1 Winner, 4 Runners-Up
  • 14 – 16 routines: 1 Winner, 7 Runners-Up
  • 17 – 25 routines: 1 Winner, 9 Runners-Up
  • 25+ routines: 1 Winner, 11 Runners-Up

Grand Champion Awards: Celebrating Overall Excellence

Grand Champion awards represent the pinnacle of achievement at Inferno Dance Competition. These prestigious awards are presented to the highest-scoring routines from larger segments of the competition. Typically, Grand Champions are awarded by Level for Groups and by Age for Solos, Duos, and Trios.

Inferno Dance reserves the right to combine or withhold Grand Champion categories if there are fewer than 25 routines within a category. Additional Grand Champion categories may be introduced based on the volume of routines and session divisions. Detailed information regarding Grand Champion awards for each specific event will be available in the awards breakdown, provided the week of the event on the final schedule.

Title Competition: Solo Spotlight

The coveted TITLE award is exclusively available for Solo performances. Dancers seeking to compete for the TITLE should refer to the detailed rules and regulations available here on the Inferno Dance website.

Inferno Showcase: Entertainment and Creativity Recognized

The Inferno Showcase is a special segment of the competition highlighting routines chosen by the judges for their exceptional entertainment value and creativity. Selection for the Showcase is not based on adjudicated scores but rather on the routine’s ability to captivate and engage the audience. Showcase routines receive a commemorative plaque and are not scored a second time.

Specialty & Judges’ Choice Awards: Unique Recognition

Throughout each Inferno Dance Competition, judges recognize standout routines with Specialty and Judges’ Choice awards. These awards are bestowed upon performances that impress the judges, irrespective of their adjudicated scores, highlighting unique qualities and exceptional artistry.

Best Improv Contest: Spontaneity and Skill

Inferno Dance Competition offers dancers the chance to showcase their improvisational skills in the Best Improv Contest. Participants sign up to compete and perform 30-second improvisations in two distinct dance styles. Winners and runners-up are selected from two age groups: 11 & Under and 12 & Over, celebrating dancers’ adaptability and creativity.

Studio Awards: Recognizing Studio Excellence

Inferno Dance acknowledges the collective achievements and positive attributes of participating studios through Studio Awards. These awards may recognize qualities such as:

  • Fans on Fire (Studio spirit and support)
  • Sportsmanship
  • Artistry
  • Performance Quality
  • Technique
  • Studio on Fire (Overall studio excellence)

These awards celebrate the holistic contribution of dance studios to the positive and vibrant atmosphere of the Inferno Dance Competition.

Stellar Impact Award: Positivity and Community Spirit

The Stellar Impact Award is a distinctive recognition bestowed upon a studio that embodies positivity, kindness, and support within the Inferno Dance environment. This award celebrates studios actively promoting the positive competition experience that Inferno strives to create. Recipients of the Stellar Impact Award are honored with a $250 donation made by Inferno to a non-profit organization in the studio’s name, rather than a physical award. Winning studios are featured on the Stellar Impact page of Inferno’s website and recognized on Inferno’s Instagram story, further highlighting their commitment to community values. Eligibility for this award is limited to loyalty clients who have consistently demonstrated Inferno’s values throughout their participation.

Staff Choice Pins: Acts of Kindness Celebrated

Inferno Dance staff members actively participate in recognizing positive behavior at each event by distributing Staff Choice Pins. These pins are awarded to attendees – dancers, directors, parents, and anyone contributing to a positive atmosphere – who demonstrate kindness, courtesy, helpfulness, and other commendable behaviors.

Important Note: Award Flexibility

Inferno Dance Competition retains the discretion to modify the number and types of awards presented at each competition. This flexibility ensures the awards system remains adaptable and continues to best serve the evolving needs and dynamics of each event.
