Ukraine is a country brimming with rich cultural traditions, and I recently had the incredible opportunity to witness one of its most dynamic displays firsthand at a local school event. Far from the typical graduation ceremony, Ukrainian schools, or at least my local school, host a fascinating “reverse-graduation” for their incoming fifth graders, marked by an impressive dance recital.
My colleague, Oksana, guided me through the city center to the regional philharmonic, a stunning venue chosen for this special occasion. As we explored the philharmonic’s beautiful architecture, its halls echoing with the spirit of music and dance, Oksana emphasized the deep-seated importance of these art forms within Ukrainian culture. This building itself was a testament to Ukraine’s commitment to the arts.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the performances by each fifth-grade class. Each group had diligently prepared a choreographed dance, ranging from contemporary Ukrainian pop to, surprisingly, American music. However, the most memorable performance was a truly authentic Hopak Dance.
For those unfamiliar, the Hopak is a traditional Ukrainian folk dance with roots in the Zaporozhian Cossacks. This energetic and virtuosic dance, often performed by men, is a spectacle of athleticism and Ukrainian spirit, showcasing impressive leaps, squats, and spins. It’s a powerful expression of Cossack heritage and Ukrainian identity, performed for centuries and still vibrantly alive today. Witnessing it performed by these young students was an absolute treat.

Following the captivating dance performances, the teachers were honored with bouquets of flowers, a heartwarming gesture of appreciation. And there I was, among them, a Ukrainian school teacher, still slightly surreal and deeply honored to be part of this welcoming culture.
Being immersed in Ukrainian culture has been an enlightening journey, filled with daily discoveries of its rich history and customs. Each experience, especially witnessing the powerful Hopak dance, reinforces my gratitude for this incredible opportunity to learn and grow in such a vibrant and welcoming country.
