Join Cal Poly Humboldt on April 8th for the 16th Annual California Big Time and Social Gathering, a day-long free event celebrating the rich cultural heritage of California Native American tribes through traditional dance and songs. From 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the West Gym, this significant gathering, deeply rooted in tribal dance song traditions, offers a unique opportunity to witness and appreciate the diverse expressions of California’s Indigenous peoples.
This cherished annual Big Time event serves as a vital bridge, bringing together tribes from across California for a profound cultural exchange. It’s more than just an event; it’s a vibrant gathering of both long-time friends and new acquaintances, all coming together to honor the sacred lands of the Wiyot people, upon which the Cal Poly Humboldt campus stands. The day is dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the enduring cultures of California Native American tribes, showcasing their living traditions through captivating performances of tribal dance songs.
The Indian Tribal and Educational Personnel Program (ITEPP) at Cal Poly Humboldt is at the heart of coordinating this enriching event. ITEPP fosters collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and alumni, extending a warm invitation to families and the wider community to partake in the festivities. Faith Kibby (Yurok), a Spring graduate, shares a personal connection to the event: “My family and I have been able to dance for the CA Indian Big Time for as long as I can remember. It’s a place we can share something we love to do, as well as invite friends and family to check out. Lots of happiness and love come in and out of this event,” highlighting the deep personal and communal value of this gathering.
This student-led initiative not only provides a positive and welcoming atmosphere for prospective students to explore the campus but also shines a light on the university’s commitment to Native programs, faculty, and staff. Adrienne Colegrove-Raymond (Hupa), Special Assistant to the President on Tribal Affairs & Community Engagement/Interim Dean of Students, emphasizes the event’s impact on students: “It ultimately invigorates Native students in the weeks leading up to finals. It centers them by highlighting their cultural values, language, and songs. It keeps the communities they will be serving on the forefront of their educational journey,” illustrating the empowering and culturally grounding effect of the Big Time gathering.
This year’s Big Time program is rich with diverse performances, including the Women’s Collective Flower Dance, Tuolumne Me-Wuk, Red Cedar Drum, Maidu Traditionalists, Cal Poly Humboldt Student Drum group, and Round Valley Feather Dancers. These performances represent a spectrum of tribal dance song traditions, offering attendees a comprehensive glimpse into the cultural tapestry of California’s Native communities.
Rico Miranda, a Cal Poly Alum and Senior Program Officer at the Native Cultures Fund, reflects on the personal significance of the event: “When I get to attend the Big Time at Cal Poly Humboldt it provides an opportunity to reconnect with friends and the community that has helped shape my current cultural practices as a Rumsen Ohlone person. This particular Big Time helps show my pre-teen children the support a higher education institution can provide to culturally active Native youth. As a traditional dancer it gives me tremendous pride to share my ceremonial life with elders, mentors, friends, and extended family that supported me at such a critical time in my own life as a young adult and student.” Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, local Indigenous vendors will also be present, offering crafts and goods.
