“Oh my God, you’re so funny!” It’s a phrase I hear occasionally. When meeting new people, I often use humor to ease the atmosphere with a quick joke. Sometimes, the joke lands just right, and people find me amusing. I inherited my quick wit from my late father; he was always ready with a sarcastic remark. Growing up with sarcasm (sarcastic people are indeed often seen as intelligent), I learned to keep up with his playful jabs throughout my childhood. This upbringing has definitely shaped my sense of humor, and it often spills over into my perspective on the world of dance, sometimes resulting in what could be called “Funny Dance Memes” in my own head before they even become internet sensations.
However, like most things in life, my sense of humor is a double-edged sword. I enjoy making people laugh and smile, so I tend to share the jokes that pop into my head. But sometimes, it would be better if those wisecracks stayed inside my head. If I’m honest, some of my thoughts can be quite cutting, dripping with sarcasm. These are the comments I try to keep to myself. But sometimes, I fail to keep them in check. They might seem too funny not to share, or I might be trying to lighten the mood. In everyday life, my tendency to spread these little bits of humor doesn’t cause too many problems (except for maybe some withering stares and eye rolls). If my fiancé is around, he might give me an exasperated look or facepalm (he knew what he was getting into when he proposed!). My internal monologue, however, is a constant source of potential funny dance memes waiting to be unleashed.
My background as a dance coach significantly contributes to my humorous – and sometimes critical – perspective, especially when it comes to dance. For years, I was the head coach and choreographer for both youth and high school dance teams. A key part of my effectiveness was my ability to critically evaluate a performance and correct mistakes before they reached the stage. I would meticulously analyze videos of our routines, searching for any flaws, determined to eliminate anything that could lower our score. I prided myself on being a great “cleaner,” always aiming for perfect synchronicity among my dancers. This critical eye, honed over years of dance coaching, often leads to internal commentary that, if externalized and paired with the right image, could easily become a viral funny dance meme.
As the years went on, we integrated more formal technical training into our sessions. We worked tirelessly to improve our team’s technique, constantly giving and applying corrections. After over a decade of this, I have a pretty good sense of what to look for when a dance routine is performed. For many years after she “graduated” from my team, my sister Jamie was one of my assistant coaches. She had also taken classes at a local dance school, so she too developed a critical eye for dance. Jamie, however, is even less forgiving in her evaluations than I am, and she tends to speak her mind more freely. So, when the two of us are in an audience together (and no one is close by), all bets are off. My time as a teacher has helped me develop a fairly reliable filter when other people are nearby. But I can’t stop the thoughts that automatically come to mind. For instance, we’ve had a few wardrobe malfunctions over the years (as documented in To Top It All Off, Part 1 and Part 2). Let’s just say none of my thoughts were exactly G-rated.
