Last week, the Asian American Dance Troupe (AADT) showcased its annual cultural performance, Eastbound, to roaring applause. Both Saturday shows were completely sold out, filled with enthusiastic supporters including friends, family, and alumni. The energy in the room was palpable, with cheers so loud they nearly drowned out the music in video recordings, much to the playful dismay of my sister watching remotely. This incredible audience response was a testament to the countless hours of dedication the dance troupe members poured into rehearsals each week. Balancing demanding schedules, they committed themselves to perfecting intricate dance routines, often sacrificing sleep and study time. By showtime, every member was ready to unleash a year’s worth of passion and diligence, sharing the stage with some of their closest companions.

While the thrill of performance and the audience’s energy are undeniably exhilarating aspects of being in a dance troupe, the true heart of AADT lies deeper. For me, joining this dance troupe in my freshman year marked a pivotal moment in my college experience, shaping it in profound ways. It was in AADT that I first discovered a genuine sense of belonging on campus. Unlike some organizations with competitive membership processes, AADT embraces inclusivity. As a non-audition-based dance troupe, it warmly welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. Many members discover their passion for dance within AADT, while others are drawn to the vibrant community and shared interests in Asian cultures, from boba to K-pop. My own reasons for joining were a mix of these, but what I gained exceeded all expectations.

From day one, the members of the dance troupe welcomed me with open arms, creating an instantly inclusive atmosphere. Rehearsals brought together students from diverse academic disciplines and year groups, all united by a common love for dance and a desire to connect with new people. Through weekly practices and social events, I forged meaningful connections with individuals I might never have otherwise encountered on a large campus. These shared experiences blossomed into genuine friendships, extending beyond the studio as we connected over meals and social gatherings. In a high-achieving environment like Harvard, the dance troupe offered a refreshing, low-pressure space where I could relax, be myself, and build authentic relationships.

After my first year as a member, I decided to contribute further by joining the board as Design Chair. Beyond creating promotional materials for performances like Horizon and Eastbound, I aimed to enhance connections within the dance troupe. To achieve this, I organized a troupe-wide music video project during reading period. This initiative offered members a chance to participate in a K-pop style video and, more importantly, to dance alongside members outside of their regular rehearsal groups. The enthusiastic participation, even during the demanding study period before finals, underscored the deep commitment and passion members have for AADT. I am continually inspired by the dedication each member brings to the dance troupe, making it the incredible community it is today. At our most recent showcase, looking out at the supportive faces in the audience, I realized I was part of something truly special – a dance troupe that had become my family. Joining AADT freshman year was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I made.
