Last week on Dance Moms, we saw Cathy’s Candy Apples bring some real competition, reminding Abby Lee Miller that her reign at the top isn’t guaranteed. This week, episode 3 of season 2, titled “Born to Dance,” cranks up the drama both on and off the dance floor. Get ready for pyramid drama, a bizarre birth-themed group dance, and a major potential defection from the ALDC team. Let’s dive into the recap of this unforgettable episode, keeping “Dance Moms Season 2” in focus!

Pyramid of Shame: Shaking Up the Hierarchy
It’s Pyramid time, the weekly ritual where Abby publicly ranks her dancers, much to the delight (and horror) of the Dance Moms. Abby starts with her usual wordplay, referencing the “apple” debacle from the previous episode with Cathy. Despite last week’s win, Abby is quick to bring the girls back down to earth, reminding them that complacency is not an option. They’re heading to New Jersey this week, and Abby’s Pyramid is designed to ensure no one gets too comfortable.
Nia finds herself at the bottom of the pyramid due to a choreography error that, strangely, wasn’t highlighted in the last episode. Nia, ever the sensitive soul, takes this to heart, seemingly losing all hope of ever reaching the coveted top spot.
Kendall is next, still on probation for her lack of musicality. Abby emphasizes Kendall’s need to improve, framing it like breaking a bad habit. It’s clear Kendall’s position is precarious, and Abby’s patience is wearing thin.
Paige, despite a “nice job” according to Abby, also lands at the bottom. It seems doing well isn’t always enough to escape Abby’s lower tiers. Mackenzie rounds out the bottom row, but with a twist: Abby announces she will have a solo this week, a potential opportunity to shine.
In a genuinely surprising move, Maddie is not at the top! Abby claims it’s not due to any fault in Maddie’s performance, but simply because she feels like someone else deserves a week at the pinnacle. Melissa, predictably, is relieved and confident that Maddie’s placement is unrelated to her actual dance ability. It’s classic Dance Moms manipulation, designed to keep everyone on edge.
Chloe is on the second tier, a step up from Maddie. Abby’s reasoning is that Chloe has “music video groupies” instead of “Abby Lee Dance Company groupies.” It’s a bizarre critique, but Christi is thrilled to see Chloe ranked higher than Maddie and jokingly suggests ice cream for everyone. However, considering Abby’s rumored ice cream consumption, that might be a costly celebration!

Brooke finally reaches the top of the Pyramid! Abby acknowledges Brooke’s achievement and, given her age, declares her a role model for the younger dancers. Brooke, often portrayed as more mature than the drama surrounding her, seems like a deserving choice, especially compared to Abby’s own questionable role model behavior.
Solos and a Seriously Strange Group Dance Theme
Abby announces the solos for this week: Mackenzie will have a solo, Maddie will perform a jazz solo, and Chloe a lyrical solo. Abby explicitly frames it as a “Chloe-Maddie Showdown,” fueling the ongoing rivalry and expectation for competition between the two girls. The pressure is on for both dancers to outperform the other.
Then comes the group dance announcement, and it’s a doozy. The dance is titled “Born to Dance,” seemingly innocent enough, until Abby reveals it’s about… birth. Yes, you read that right. A dance depicting childbirth. Abby describes it as “mysterious,” leaving the moms and likely the audience, completely bewildered. Christi voices her understandable discomfort with the theme, but Abby is undeterred, seemingly embracing the bizarre concept with full force. She is the “Georgia O’Keeffe of dance,” apparently, when it comes to vaginal art.
To add to the strangeness, Abby tells Brooke, the oldest dancer, that she will be the “glue” holding the birth dance together. The metaphor is… unsettling, to say the least, especially in the context of childbirth.
Rehearsal Room Chaos and Brooke’s Football Game Escape
In the Momservatory, the moms grapple with the birth dance concept, while Abby dives deeper into the details with the girls. She describes the dance as “provocative, yet beautiful,” which is certainly one way to describe childbirth. She even wants the costumes to look like they are “just being born.” The implications of this costume concept, especially in Abby’s world, are potentially disturbing.
The moms’ conversation shifts from placentas to the Pyramid, with Christi directly asking Melissa about Maddie’s lower ranking. Melissa, ever the diplomat (or perhaps conflict-avoider), downplays any concern, suggesting Maddie being lower might be doing others a favor. Christi, however, is clearly enjoying Maddie’s temporary slide from the top.
Brooke, while happy to be on top of the pyramid, is clearly struggling with the pressures of the dance team. She admits she’d rather be doing something else, hinting at a growing dissatisfaction with the ALDC environment.
That evening, Brooke escapes the studio and attends her high school football game. She mentions Abby constantly telling her to ignore the “fun things” she’s missing out on by being a dancer. This scene highlights the sacrifices these young dancers make and Brooke’s yearning for a more normal teenage life. The episode subtly plants the seeds for Brooke’s potential departure.

Cheerleading Tryouts and Mom Drama at Day Drink O’Clock
The next day, Brooke discusses cheerleading tryouts with Kelly, contemplating leaving the dance competition to try out for the cheerleading squad. Kelly, understandably worried about Abby’s reaction, ultimately supports Brooke’s decision, even if it means potential expulsion from the studio. This is a significant moment of parental support for Brooke’s individual desires, even against Abby’s iron will.
Later, the moms (minus Holly) are enjoying some day drinks. Kelly confides in the other moms about Brooke’s cheerleading aspirations. Jill, in a moment of subtle glee, seems almost pleased by the prospect of Brooke leaving, showcasing the competitive undercurrent between the Dance Moms. Melissa, in her interview, states she would “never let Maddie quit,” reinforcing her unwavering commitment to Maddie’s dance career, and perhaps subtly judging Kelly’s parenting.
Two Days Before Competition: Brooke is MIA and Abby Loses It
Two days before the competition, Abby realizes Brooke is absent from rehearsal. Paige’s reaction is priceless, a mix of fear and knowing dread. Abby’s solution to Brooke’s absence? Screaming her name repeatedly, as if Brooke will magically reappear.

Abby confronts Kelly, who vaguely mentions “something at school” to explain Brooke’s absence, deliberately avoiding mentioning cheerleading. Abby, predictably, is furious and cancels the group dance, dismissing Kendall, Nia, and Paige, who don’t have solos. The other moms are understandably upset by Abby’s impulsive decision.
Holly attempts to reason with Abby, but to no avail. Christi, in a show of solidarity, declares that Chloe and Maddie will also not perform their solos if the group dance is cancelled. Abby, however, sees this as Christi manipulating the situation to benefit Chloe, fueled by the Pyramid rankings.
Abby essentially kicks everyone out of the studio, declaring they can compete as an “independent team” without her name attached.
One Day Before Competition: Abby’s Jersey Arrival and Cathy’s Call
Despite her dramatic exit, Abby decides to join the moms and girls on the bus to New Jersey. She arrives in full Abby regalia – fur coat and scowl included – claiming she has to accompany them because they “have no idea what it’s going to be like in New Jersey.” The implication of New Jersey being some sort of chaotic wasteland is played for comedic effect.
Alt text: Humorous image macro labeled “Ugly Ass Guidos” referencing Abby Lee Miller’s stereotypical view of New Jersey from Dance Moms Season 2.
Right after Abby boards, Kelly announces she will not be going to the competition, further escalating the tension. Abby’s passive-aggressive response to Paige, “You really know when a person’s important in your house, don’t ya?” is cutting and emotionally manipulative.
On the bus, Melissa receives a call from Cathy. Abby is livid about the “unethical” contact. Cathy informs Melissa that Candy Apples will also be at the New Jersey competition, bringing her “geriatric dance students,” “ginger boy” (Gavin), and “Vivi The Hostage” (Vivienne).
Abby’s main concern is that Cathy will discover Brooke’s absence and use it to psychologically torment the girls. Abby, in a moment of extreme hyperbole, threatens to “skin Brooke and hang the hide in her studio” if Cathy’s dancers beat them.
Competition Day: Remember Brooke Never Existed!
On competition day, Abby instructs the girls to “remember that Brooke never existed,” a bizarre and impossible request. It highlights Abby’s denial and her attempt to erase Brooke’s presence from the team’s dynamic.
In the Candy Apples dressing room, Cathy refers to Abby’s dancers as her “nemis,” showcasing her ongoing rivalry and slightly skewed vocabulary. She then instructs her dancers to boo Abby’s team and avoid them “like the Plague,” demonstrating her lack of sportsmanship and perpetuating the toxic competition environment.
Back in the ALDC dressing room, Christi accurately labels Cathy a “low blower,” perfectly summing up Cathy’s underhanded tactics.
Solos: Mackenzie Shines, Chloe Triumphs, Maddie Falters
First up are the solos. Abby’s pre-performance pep talk to Mackenzie is, as usual, filled with threats of dire consequences if she messes up.

Mackenzie, thankfully, performs well. Chloe’s lyrical solo is next, and even Abby grudgingly admits Chloe did a good job, despite finding fault with supposed mistakes. Maddie performs her jazz solo, and while outwardly it seems strong, Maddie herself feels it was “off,” blaming her dislike for jazz.
Meanwhile, back in Pennsylvania, Brooke successfully makes the cheerleading team! Kelly sees it as a bittersweet moment, acknowledging the excitement for Brooke but also the likely fallout with Abby.
At the solo awards, Mackenzie wins first place in her age division. Then, in Chloe and Maddie’s age division, the unthinkable happens: Maddie gets third place, and Chloe takes first! Melissa blames the judging, naturally. Abby, however, claims Chloe made mistakes and Maddie danced better, but that Maddie was too “professional” to win against “amateurs.” The denial is strong, and the narrative that Maddie is always superior is fiercely maintained.
Group Numbers: Birth Dance and Bee Costume Drama
Before the group dance, Abby reminds the girls how close she was to not even coming and reiterates Brooke’s worthlessness. The mixed messages continue, and the emotional manipulation is relentless.

Candy Apples perform their group routine first. Abby is unimpressed, particularly with Vivi’s minimal role, seeing her as just a prop to lower the average age.
The Abby Lee dancers then perform their “Born to Dance” birth-themed routine. Despite the bizarre concept, the dance is well-received. Candy Apples place eighth, a significant loss. The Abby Lee Dance Company, on the other hand, wins first place overall! Cathy looks visibly ill with defeat.
Abby, unable to resist gloating, forces the girls and moms to “congratulate” Cathy. The confrontation escalates when Abby demands to know what Cathy did with Abby’s bee costume, worn by Vivi the previous year. Cathy claims she donated it to Goodwill. Melissa claims it cost $300. Cathy, in true Cathy fashion, tells Abby to “Bill me.”
The dressing room confrontation devolves into a personal attack between Cathy and Christi. Christi makes a comment about the bee costume, and Cathy retaliates with insults about Christi’s nose and calls her “disco ball.” The children from both teams are present for this childish and unprofessional display. Cathy ends the exchange by telling Christi “The dog pound is calling,” a nonsensical insult.
Next Week: Peyton Returns and Dollhouse Nightmares
The episode concludes with a preview for next week. Peyton, the taller, older dancer, returns, along with her mother. Chloe is visibly upset. Peyton’s appearance and costume are described as resembling a “porcelain doll” from a horror episode, foreshadowing more drama and likely conflict for Chloe in the upcoming episode.
