Finding My Rhythm: How Dance Dancing Taught Me the Power of Collaboration

“I cannot dance.”

It’s a statement I’ve often uttered, a confession that feels particularly heavy when considering my heritage. Growing up immersed in West African culture, dance is not just movement; it’s a vibrant language, a storytelling tradition woven into the fabric of our celebrations and daily life. My grandmother, with a sigh and a shake of her head, would often lament my attempts at cultural dances, describing my awkwardness as nothing short of a “tragedy.” Beautiful, expressive forms rooted in our ancestry would, under my feet, devolve into clumsy imitations, my limbs seemingly operating on a different rhythm altogether.

And yet, despite this self-proclaimed inability, year after year, I find myself drawn to the dance floor at family gatherings. Perhaps it’s the infectious energy of the music, or the communal joy that fills the air, but I step onto that floor, seemingly oblivious to my perceived lack of skill. Inevitably, my performance reaches a point of such comedic disarray that a kind relative will gently guide me off, patiently demonstrating the correct steps, repeating them until my body begins to understand the intended movements. Strangely, this pattern of initial struggle followed by eventual (slightly less embarrassing) participation extends beyond family events. For the past three years, I’ve even found myself performing choreographed routines with my school during our lively pep rallies.

Reflecting on these experiences, it strikes me that my initial statement, “I cannot dance,” is a profound mischaracterization. The truth is, I can dance, and with enough practice and guidance, I am capable of moving with a semblance of coordination. However, my Dance Dancing ability is intrinsically linked to my willingness to embrace collaboration. It’s the input, the shared energy, and the supportive presence of others that transform my initial uncoordinated movements into something approaching grace. The magic doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s in the collective effort.

My journey with dance dancing, from hesitant participant to pep rally performer, has instilled in me a deep appreciation for community and collaboration. I’ve learned that personal growth isn’t a solitary endeavor. Just as learning dance steps requires mirroring, feedback, and shared practice, so too does excelling in any field. I now actively seek out environments that foster this collaborative spirit, places where shared learning and mutual support are valued. Whether it’s in academic pursuits, creative projects, or simply navigating life’s challenges, I understand that the most meaningful progress often arises from working together, embracing diverse perspectives, and finding our rhythm in community.
