Avril Hernandez’s journey into the world of dance began in the Philippines at the tender age of four, igniting a lifelong passion that has propelled her across continents and dance styles. Her foundational training in ballet provided a strong base, which she then expanded upon after moving to the United States, embracing the dynamic energy of Jazz and Hip-Hop during her teenage years. This diverse early experience seamlessly transitioned into explorations of Modern and Tap dance, and even Ballroom during her college years, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the art form.

Driven by a desire to hone her skills further, Avril was accepted into the prestigious summer program at New York City’s Amy Marshall Dance Company in 2007. This company is renowned for its powerful and thought-provoking choreography, an experience that undoubtedly shaped Avril’s artistic perspective. In 2011, she solidified her credentials by graduating from Dance Master’s of America Teacher Training School at UB, earning certifications in Ballet, Jazz, and Modern dance. Fuelled by ambition, Avril then pursued her dreams in Los Angeles, securing a $10,000 scholarship to the American Musical & Dramatic Academy (AMDA) where she immersed herself in Dance Theatre.
Returning home, Avril dedicated two years to teaching at the Dance Institute of Washington and continued to share her expertise at numerous schools and dance studios throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2021, seeking to deepen her own dance journey, Avril took a hiatus from full-time teaching to focus on personal training. This led her to Crown Dance Studio, where she began training in Ballroom under the guidance of Abraham. Her dedication quickly paid off, as she clinched 1st place in her very first competition at the Yuletide Ball. Furthering her Ballroom expertise, Avril embarked on a mentorship with Alex Schoendorf, traveling to Berlin twice in 2022 for intensive training with Alex and Denis Weckbach. She also sought instruction from Malou Linders in Amsterdam, alongside Pedro Reis from Brazil, demonstrating her commitment to learning from the best in the field.
Currently, Avril continues to passionately pursue her dance career. She is eager to inspire aspiring dancers, nurturing their dreams and helping them discover their own passions, just as she has. While continuing to teach private lessons and choreographing for competitions at Perfect Pointe Dance Studio, and creating choreography for weddings and quinceañeras, Avril is thrilled to be a part of the Crown Dance Studio family as Marketing Director and Professional Dance Instructor. She brings her wealth of experience to Crown Dance Studio, teaching dynamic Hip Hop classes on Wednesday nights and assisting with other group classes, enriching the studio’s offerings. Beyond dance, Avril enjoys traveling and cherishing moments with family and friends.
