In Jimbaran, Bali, an invitation from a local resident named Mariana opened doors to the captivating realm of Balinese culture. Beyond witnessing sacred ceremonies and spiritual practices, we were privileged to observe the artistry of traditional Balinese Dance firsthand. Mariana, a man of many talents including Prana Shakti practice and dance, generously shared his world, introducing us to his niece and daughters, all involved in this beautiful art form.

Our exploration began on a bright Saturday when Mariana invited us to a private dance session led by his graceful niece for teenage girls. This intimate glimpse into the learning process was followed by a visit to a local dance studio. There, we watched Mariana’s daughter participate in a class designed for younger, aspiring Balinese dancers.

The dance studio, bathed in natural light, became our window into a world reminiscent of Edgar Degas’s ballerina paintings, yet distinctly Balinese. The studio was alive with elaborate tiaras, vibrant animal masks, and traditional costumes, all set against the backdrop of attractive Balinese architecture. Observing these young, disciplined girls in practice felt like stepping backstage into a living, breathing artwork.

We noticed the young dancers wearing thick elastic bands around their waists. These bands serve a vital purpose: to immobilize the upper body, a key characteristic of Balinese dance. This technique allows for the distinctive and captivating focus on the dancers’ arms and heads, which move with incredible grace and expressiveness. This controlled upper body is fundamental to the unique aesthetic of Balinese dance.
