Founded on March 30, 1958, by the visionary Alvin Ailey, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater stands as a beacon of modern dance, celebrated globally for its profound impact and artistic excellence. This remarkable company has not only built a vast repertory of nearly 300 works from over 100 choreographers but has also graced stages in more than 70 countries across six continents. Recognized by a US Congressional resolution as a “vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World,” the Ailey Dance Company embodies a powerful legacy of artistic innovation and cultural significance.
Born during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, the Ailey Dance Company was intentionally created to give voice to the African American experience. However, its mission quickly expanded to embrace universal themes of humanity, transcending racial, religious, and national boundaries. Alvin Ailey’s vision was to create a space where dancers of all backgrounds could contribute to and enrich the art form. He reimagined his company as a “library of dance,” a haven for diverse choreographic voices that might otherwise be lost or forgotten. This pioneering approach established the Ailey Dance Company as the first modern dance company of its kind, broadening the global appreciation for dance through its innovative model and breathtaking performances.
Prior to his passing in 1989, Alvin Ailey entrusted the company’s future to Judith Jamison, who served as Artistic Director for 21 years. Jamison led the Ailey Dance Company to unprecedented heights, including historic performances in South Africa and a monumental 50-city world tour commemorating the company’s 50th anniversary. Her dedication culminated in the 2005 opening of The Joan Weill Center for Dance, a landmark achievement as the largest building in New York City dedicated solely to dance, providing a permanent home for AILEY. In 2011, Robert Battle succeeded Jamison, guiding the company until 2023 and establishing the New Directions Choreography Lab, further solidifying the Ailey Dance Company‘s commitment to nurturing new talent.
