Gibney Dance, a renowned organization dedicated to supporting the dance community, is once again providing vital subsidized rehearsal space for dance artists in New York City. Thanks to the generous support from Dance/NYC and other foundations, Gibney is making Rentable Dance Studios more accessible and affordable for non-profit and independent dance creators.
Please note that while the subsidized rehearsal rate offering for 2023 has concluded, the program is set to resume in January 2024, bringing renewed opportunities for artists to access quality rentable dance studios at significantly reduced rates.
Starting in January 2024, Gibney will offer a total of 290 hours each month of subsidized rehearsal space at just $10 per hour. This initiative extends throughout the entire calendar year of 2024 and is specifically designed to support non-profit and independent dance artists in need of rentable dance studios.
This subsidized program is open to all artists, and Gibney strongly encourages applications from diverse artists, particularly those who identify with the following groups:
- Small-budget dancemakers operating with annual expenses under $500,000, who demonstrate a clear financial need for subsidized rentable dance studios, including those working outside the traditional non-profit model.
- Artists identifying as ALAANA (African, Latino/a/x, Asian, Arab, Native American), disabled, immigrant, women-identifying, gender nonconforming/nonbinary/genderqueer, transgender, and LGBTQIA+ dance makers.
- Dance makers representing a wide spectrum of dancemaking perspectives, including various percussive dance forms, seeking rentable dance studios to develop their craft.
These subsidized hours for rentable dance studios will become available each month as the non-profit dance rehearsal calendar opens. Hours are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all 290 subsidized hours for the month are allocated, the subsidized rate opportunity will temporarily pause until the following month’s calendar becomes available, ensuring consistent access to rentable dance studios throughout the year.
To maximize the reach of this subsidy, each artist is limited to a total of 16 hours of subsidized rentable dance studios throughout 2024. This approach allows Gibney to support a larger number of artists and ensure that these valuable resources are distributed widely within the dance community. New applicants utilizing the subsidized rates for the first time are required to complete the Artist Registration Form to finalize their registration for rentable dance studios access.
Booking your subsidized rentable dance studios is a straightforward process. Simply create or log in to your Gibney Rental account and complete the Non-Profit Dance Rehearsal Request form. To ensure the subsidized rate is applied, remember to indicate your request for subsidized rates in the “Additional Requests” section of the form when booking your rentable dance studios.
