Starting a new year often means embracing fresh routines, especially those that boost a healthier lifestyle. Millennium Dance Complex Nashville offers an exciting path towards creative expression and the sheer joy of movement. More than just a dance studio, it’s a place where you might find unexpected connections, turning classmates into close friends and building a supportive community.
“People are seeking exercise that goes beyond lifting weights in a gym. Dance engages every aspect – mind, body, and soul,” explains Tamara Williams, the passionate owner of Millennium Dance Complex Nashville. “It’s truly amazing how our studio, initially envisioned as a dance school for kids, evolved into exactly what Nashville needed. We are deeply committed to diversity, welcoming individuals to dance without judgment, regardless of age, size, background, or gender. It simply doesn’t matter here. We’re all about having fun together.”
Tamara recounts the beginnings of MDC Nashville, “I had a connection with AnnMarie Hudson, the founder of the original Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles. We discussed the possibility of me opening a studio in Nashville. After some initial hurdles, I finally launched it. Our primary focus was to establish a children’s dance team. We had around 75 kids and also offered open classes for all ages, which we were working to grow when the pandemic struck. To stay afloat, we took on various events – weddings, bar mitzvahs, you name it. That’s what kept us going.”
After the pandemic, Tamara recognized a shift and introduced more open classes geared towards a different demographic. “Adults weren’t always comfortable in classes primarily filled with 11-year-olds. Now, our most popular classes are for adult beginners, people who are either completely new to dance or haven’t danced in years. They quickly get the hang of it and become hooked. We offer beginner classes almost every evening. They are so infectious and uplifting, and people leave our studio with genuine smiles.”
The appeal of Millennium Dance Complex Nashville extends beyond just dance steps. “I’ve witnessed countless instances where individuals are initially worried about fitting in, but by the time they leave, they feel like they’ve found their community. They feel valued and safe here. Everyone deserves a place where they belong. That’s what I aimed to create with MDC Nashville. There’s no judgment, only mutual encouragement. It’s truly wonderful to see.” The bonds formed in some classes are so strong that students celebrate holidays together, highlighting the deep friendships fostered within the studio.
Millennium Dance Complex Nashville adopts a unique, welcoming approach for newcomers. “I’m very particular about how we welcome people to Millennium,” Tamara emphasizes. “When someone walks in, we make it a point to ask their name and introduce ourselves. Then, if they are unsure about what class to take, we give them a tour of the studio and explain the different class types and schedules available, ensuring they feel informed and comfortable.”
Flexibility is key at MDC Nashville; students aren’t locked into rigid memberships. “There are no binding contracts here. You can pay a drop-in fee of $15 per class, purchase class packages, opt for an unlimited monthly pass, or simply drop in whenever you like,” Tamara points out. This flexibility is crucial in removing pressure and making dance accessible. “It offers more freedom. We always seek feedback as people leave to ensure they had a positive and enjoyable experience.”
Millennium Dance Complex Nashville also provides valuable opportunities for interns, choreographers, and dancers looking to advance their careers. “Joy Spears has secured numerous professional gigs because of her experience here,” Tamara shares proudly. “She’s worked with major artists like Walker Hayes and Florida Georgia Line. Chmira Dayvon even performed with The Weeknd at the Super Bowl halftime show. When you dedicate yourself and work hard, you’ll see real results!”
MDC Nashville is excited to celebrate its fifth anniversary this February, marking a significant milestone in its journey of fostering dance, community, and opportunity in Nashville.
