Groove National Dance Competition: Elevating the Dance Stage with New Competition Levels

Groove Dance Competition is thrilled to announce exciting updates for the 2016-17 season, designed to create an even more inclusive and dynamic environment for dancers of all levels. This season marks the introduction of a third tier of competition – the Intermediate level – alongside expanded National Finals and a wider reach for regional events. These enhancements reflect Groove’s commitment to fostering growth and providing memorable experiences for every dancer.

Recognizing the diverse training backgrounds of young performers, Groove has refined its competition structure to ensure fairer and more engaging contests. While the Novice and Competitive levels remain, the addition of the Intermediate level addresses a crucial segment of dancers who are dedicated to their craft but may not train as intensely as those in the Competitive category.

Jennifer Swanchara, Assistant Director at Groove, clarifies these levels: “Our Novice level is designed for dancers who are newer to competitions, perhaps in their first or second year, training up to three hours weekly. The new Intermediate level is for dancers with a moderate training schedule of four to five hours per week. Finally, our Competitive level is tailored for seasoned competitors who dedicate six or more hours a week to dance training.” This tiered system allows dancers to compete against peers with similar levels of experience and training commitment, fostering a more balanced and encouraging competitive landscape.

The 2016-17 season will feature not one, but two National Finals, offering dancers more opportunities to shine on a national stage. The first will be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from July 7-10, 2017, and the second in Ocean City, Maryland, from July 17-21, 2017. Both National Finals will host Groove’s comprehensive two-level convention, providing valuable learning and development opportunities alongside the competitions. Beyond the intense competition, Groove Nationals are also about creating lasting memories and friendships. The GrooveFest Gala and Beach Bash are social highlights, offering participants a chance to unwind and connect with fellow dancers in a fun, relaxed setting. The popular Parent Dance Battle adds a unique twist, inviting parents to showcase their moves in a choreographed routine, with entry fees donated to the winning team’s chosen charity. Crowning the National Finals is The JAM, a thrilling battle of the best group dances from the entire event, with a grand prize of $1,000 cash, adding an extra layer of excitement and prestige.

Groove’s commitment to accessibility and reaching more dancers is further demonstrated through the expansion of its regional competitions. The 2016-17 tour will extend to new cities, including Charleston, South Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Concord, New Hampshire; and Detroit, Michigan, along with an additional competition in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This broadened regional presence ensures that more dancers across the country have the chance to participate in the Groove experience closer to home.

Swanchara emphasizes Groove’s ongoing dedication to improvement and dancer satisfaction: “We are constantly seeking ways to enhance our events and create an optimal environment for the continuous growth of each dancer. Our goal is to consistently deliver positive and unforgettable experiences for everyone involved in our events—dancers, teachers, directors, and their families.” Groove National Dance Competition is more than just a competition; it’s a community that celebrates dance, fosters growth, and creates lasting memories.
