Balletnova Center For Dance, originally established as Arlington Center for Dance in the fall of 1981 by Ken and Kathy Fredgren, has blossomed into a leading institution for dance education. For decades, it has been celebrated as a top-tier dance training center in the bustling Metropolitan Washington DC area, renowned particularly for its exceptional pre-professional ballet program. Beyond ballet, BalletNova also boasts an extensive array of adult dance programs, offering classes spanning various genres from jazz and hip hop to tap, modern, and body conditioning.
A Legacy of Dance Excellence: From Arlington Center to BalletNova
The roots of BalletNova Center for Dance are firmly planted in the vision of Ken and Kathy Fredgren. Their dedication and expertise nurtured Arlington Center for Dance into a respected name within the dance community. The center became synonymous with high-quality instruction and a nurturing environment for aspiring dancers. Its reputation grew steadily, drawing students from across the region seeking premier dance education and comprehensive training. The diverse adult program further solidified its position as a welcoming space for dance enthusiasts of all ages and interests, offering a wide spectrum of dance styles to explore.
In 2002, a new chapter began as the Fredgrens transitioned into retirement, entrusting the center’s future to Nancie Woods, a long-time faculty member and accomplished choreographer. This transition marked a significant evolution as the school was acquired by the board and restructured into a non-profit organization, becoming The Center Dance Company, with Ms. Woods stepping into the role of Artistic Director. This shift ensured the continuation of the center’s mission and commitment to dance excellence under new leadership.
Evolution and Expansion: The Move to Carlin Springs Road
After a remarkable 25-year tenure in Arlington, BalletNova Center for Dance faced an unforeseen challenge with the loss of its lease in February 2008. A comprehensive search for a new home within Arlington proved unsuccessful, leading them to a prime location just outside the city limits. A spacious 20,800 square foot facility on Carlin Springs Road was identified and meticulously transformed into six state-of-the-art dance studios. These studios were equipped with sprung floors and high ceilings, creating an optimal environment for dance training. BalletNova Center for Dance triumphantly re-opened in July 2008 at this new location, strategically positioned a mere block from Arlington, and conveniently close to Alexandria, the City of Falls Church, and Fairfax County. The center’s modern studios are also available for rent, accommodating rehearsals, events, and various artistic endeavors.
The Fredgren Studio Theater: A Unique Performance Space
September 2015 marked another milestone for BalletNova with the inauguration of the Fredgren Studio Theater. This black box-style theater, a unique performance venue in Northern Virginia, stands as a tribute to the center’s founders, Ken and Kathy Fredgren. Specifically designed for dance performances, the Fredgren Studio Theater features a sprung wood floor with a marley overlay, comfortable seating for 150 audience members, professional sound and lighting systems, and the added convenience of free parking. BalletNova Center for Dance envisions the Fredgren Studio Theater as a vital community asset, offering rental opportunities, especially with significant discounts for non-profit organizations. It aims to foster the growth of small dance, theater, and music groups, enriching the arts landscape in Northern Virginia.
Comprehensive Dance Programs for All Ages and Levels
BalletNova Center for Dance currently serves over 1,300 students, providing a robust curriculum grounded in internationally recognized systems such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. These syllabi form the backbone of the children’s pre-professional classical ballet program across all levels, ensuring a structured and high-quality dance education. BalletNova operates on a semester basis for its adult and enrichment divisions, while the Pre-professional training program follows a school year schedule. The center welcomes students of all ages, from beginners to advanced dancers, into its year-round program, fostering a lifelong love for dance and providing pathways for professional aspirations.
