But I went anyway. And that single decision turned out to be life-changing. Walking into that pole dance class, I discovered more than just a workout. I found welcoming instructors, a supportive and fun community of fellow dancers, and, most importantly, a way to exercise that I genuinely loved. Unlike other forms of dance or aerial fitness I had briefly tried, pole dance was surprisingly accessible for beginners. For the remainder of Winter Term, the studio became my happy place, and pole dance practice became a daily joy.

I resigned myself to putting pole dance on hold, thinking I might be able to resume during the summer if my job situation allowed.

Despite my initial nerves, the passion for pole dance and the growing community inspired me to say yes. I nominated myself and was thrilled to join the OBurlesque Board. Becoming part of one of Oberlin’s most vibrant and supportive student organizations was an unexpected privilege.

Since becoming Pole Officer, I’ve been able to share my passion for pole dance with the Oberlin community. I’ve built a newsletter reaching over 100 students, organized and led numerous training sessions, and hosted beginner pole classes that consistently draw in more than five participants. Performing pole dance in a circus showcase was a highlight, allowing me to challenge common stereotypes surrounding pole dance and introduce a captivating new element to our shows. December brought an exciting collaboration performance between OBurlesque and OCircus. The energy and enthusiasm were incredible!
