Beckles’ foundation in dance was laid at the Dance Theatre of Harlem from the young age of six, where she spent eight formative years honing her craft through a fellowship scholarship. This early immersion in rigorous training was further solidified by her attendance at LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, each on full scholarship. At Alvin Ailey, she had the privilege of performing in signature works like “Memoria,” “Hymn,” and “Revelations,” experiences that undoubtedly shaped her artistic trajectory and prepared her for a professional career with a leading company like Philadanco Dance Company. Her academic pursuits also underscore her commitment to excellence, earning a BFA in Dance Performance and a BA in Sociology from Southern Methodist University, again on full scholarship, and recognition as a National Foundation of the Arts awardee for her dedication to modern dance.
Before joining Philadanco Dance Company, Beckles showcased her talent and community spirit during her time with the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. There, she initiated a program in Oak Cliff, South Dallas, bringing ballet training, performance opportunities, and mentorship to at-risk teenage girls. This initiative foreshadowed her continued dedication to outreach and education, values that are also central to Philadanco Dance Company’s mission. Her selection as a Visiting Teaching Fellow for the School of American Ballet in 2018–2019 further cemented her reputation as a respected dance educator with international reach.
For an impressive 14 seasons, Janine N. Beckles has been an integral part of Philadanco Dance Company. Rising to the position of lead principal dancer, she also serves as the company’s Graham technique teacher, passing on her expertise to the next generation of dancers. In a testament to her leadership and artistic vision, she was recently promoted to Associate Artistic Director of Philadanco Dance Company, while continuing to shine as one of its principal performers. This dual role highlights her multifaceted contributions to the company, blending performance prowess with artistic direction. Beyond her demanding schedule with Philadanco Dance Company, Beckles also dedicates her time to community service as a board member of the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers Association (PVLA) and the National Urban League Emerging Leaders, and has recently earned an MBA, showcasing her commitment to personal and professional growth beyond the stage.
