Looking for Pole Dance Near Me? Discover the Joy of Pole Fitness

I used to dread working out. Throughout my six years of track and field and cross country in high school, exercise felt like a chore. The mandatory gym class fitness tests like the PACER, push-ups, and mile run were something to be endured, after which I’d vow to avoid working out at all costs. I never imagined my perspective would completely change when I got to college.

But it did.

During Winter Term, a micro-internship provided me with free time outside of work. Searching for something to fill that time, I signed up for classes at a Circus and Aerial Arts school about twenty minutes away. That Monday, I noticed they offered pole dance classes. On a whim, I decided to sign up.

The Sunday before my first class, my initial enthusiasm waned. What had I gotten myself into? I had zero dance experience (unless you count ballet from over a decade ago), not much flexibility, and limited strength. The idea of feeling confident and sexy in a dance class felt miles away from my comfort zone in competitive Speech and Debate. Even before stepping into the studio, I was ready to back out.

Despite my apprehension, I went. And it turned out to be a life-altering experience. In that pole dance class, I found welcoming instructors, a vibrant community of fellow dancers, and, surprisingly, my favorite way to exercise. Unlike other dance or aerial activities I’d tried, pole dance was incredibly beginner-friendly. Right from the start, you could learn impressive-looking tricks and feel a sense of accomplishment. For the rest of Winter Term, I was hooked, practicing pole every day at the studio.

Upon returning to college, however, reality hit. The closest pole studio was 45 minutes away, and without a car, regular classes seemed impossible. I resigned myself to the idea of maybe resuming pole over the summer if I wasn’t tied up with a job.

Then, at a circus club meeting, our President, Zoe, casually mentioned that OBurlesque was getting a dance pole and that we, as club members, would have access to it. I could hardly believe my ears. A few weeks later, OBurlesque officers actually assembled a stage pole right there in Hales Gymnasium. I jumped at the chance to dance again. Just like at my first studio, I quickly connected with other pole dancers, learned from them, and deepened my passion.

At the end of the year, the current Pole Officer approached me. She was graduating and asked if I would consider nominating myself for the role of Pole Officer for the following year. Despite my nerves, I put my name forward and was eventually welcomed onto the OBurlesque Board. It was a privilege to become part of one of Oberlin’s most energetic and supportive student organizations.

In my time as Pole Officer, I’ve created a newsletter that now reaches over 100 students, led numerous training sessions, and hosted beginner pole classes that regularly attract five or more participants. I even had the opportunity to perform pole dance in a circus showcase, challenging preconceived notions about pole and introducing a new art form to our performances. This December, we’re planning a collaborative performance between OBurlesque and OCircus. I’m incredibly excited and a little nervous!

What I love most is introducing other students to pole dance. It’s a chance to break down stereotypes, encourage athleticism, and explore sensuality in a welcoming and accessible dance form. Being involved with Obie Pole has been such a rewarding experience, completely reshaping my view of exercise and fitness. Now, I actually look forward to doing crunches and push-ups in the evening, knowing it will help me improve my pole skills. I no longer dread stretching or arm workouts, and I even tolerate planks – all thanks to pole.

And the best part is, as a student, anyone can join in.

Obie Pole truly exemplifies Oberlin’s dedication to supporting its students’ passions and well-being. The college, along with the support of OBurlesque and OCircus, has allowed Obie Pole to flourish.
