Dances with Wool: The Knitting Journey of Pam

Pam’s lifelong affection for fiber arts began in her childhood, guided by her grandmother’s crochet lessons. From crafting simple potholders, she progressed to designing granny square vests during her middle school years, showcasing an early flair for design and textiles. Her sewing skills developed in high school, culminating in the creation of her own wedding dress, a testament to her dedication and skill. About three decades ago, Pam expanded her repertoire by taking a beginner knitting class, where she completed her first sweater. This initial experience ignited a passion, leading her to a second class and a more ambitious project: a sweater featuring three colors of yarn, intricate intarsia, and sophisticated cables. This marked the true beginning of her enduring love affair with knitting, a passion that has only deepened over time.

During a three-year period living in Wiesbaden, Germany, Pam’s enthusiasm for knitting blossomed further. She established a knitting group that welcomed both American expatriates and local German residents, fostering a community around her beloved craft. Her travels throughout Europe became opportunities to collect unique yarn souvenirs from local stores in each country she visited. These treasured yarns were then transformed into tangible memories – a “Paris shawl,” a “Prague scarf,” an “Amsterdam shawl,” and others. Each time she wears these handcrafted items, she is reminded of her cherished adventures abroad.

Pam’s knitting prowess has been recognized with numerous accolades at the Chesterfield County Fair and the Virginia State Fair. Her achievements include the prestigious “Best In Show” award, along with an impressive collection of 10 First Place ribbons, 5 Second Place ribbons, and 1 Third Place ribbon. These awards highlight her exceptional skill and artistry in knitting.

Driven by her passion, Pam has dedicated herself to sharing her knitting expertise with others. She has taught countless friends and family members the art of knitting over the years. As a Craft Yarn Council Certified Knitting Instructor, Pam is uniquely qualified and genuinely enthusiastic about introducing new learners to the joys of knitting. Individuals eager to explore the world of knitting are encouraged to join one of her classes and experience firsthand her infectious excitement for this rewarding craft.
