The Department of Drama, Theatre & Dance at QC offers a comprehensive and enriching academic experience within the liberal arts tradition. Our balanced curriculum of theoretical study and practical application is designed to cultivate a deep understanding of drama, theatre, and dance. This approach provides a solid foundation for students aiming for advanced graduate studies in the performing arts. We are committed to nurturing individual talent and honing skills, particularly for those aspiring to conservatory training and professional careers on stage or in dance.
Our department boasts robust and diverse academic programs in both theatre and dance. The theatre program encompasses a wide spectrum of disciplines, including theatre history, dramatic literature, acting techniques, directing principles, stage management practices, scenic and costume design, and technical theatre production. In Qc Dance, our dance program is equally comprehensive, offering training in modern dance, classical ballet, tap, diverse Asian and African dance forms, choreography composition, and dance history. Each academic year, we proudly present five fully-staged productions across our three performance spaces. These productions showcase a variety of genres, from dramatic plays and comedic works to classic theatre pieces, contemporary plays, musical theatre productions, operatic performances, and dynamic dance concerts. Under the mentorship of our experienced faculty and distinguished guest directors and designers, our talented student actors and dancers perform for a broad audience drawn from the college community and the surrounding Queens neighborhoods.
Beyond our mainstage season, we provide numerous opportunities each year for student actors and qc dance students to develop and direct their own performance projects under faculty guidance. In addition to our major and minor programs in Drama, Theatre & Dance, the department is dedicated to offering courses that fulfill general education requirements within the liberal arts curriculum. Crucially, our production programs are enriched by the active and extensive participation of non-major students who contribute in vital roles as actors, dancers, technicians, and backstage crew members.
