Remembering Charles “Bill” William Dance: Obituary of a Dedicated CNR and UTU Leader

Charles William Dance, affectionately known as Bill to everyone who knew him, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the age of 55. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.

Born on April 4, 1953, Bill’s life journey began in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. In 1968, his family relocated to Dauphin, marking a significant chapter where he would meet his beloved wife, Patricia. Their bond blossomed, leading to marriage in Winnipeg on September 1, 1973. Transcona became their cherished home, where they built their life together.

Bill dedicated 39 years of his life to the CNR (Canadian National Railway). He embarked on his career at the young age of 16, initially working in the hostile environments of Dauphin before undergoing training in The Pas. He spent the majority of his career at Symington Yards in Winnipeg, serving as a conductor, a role in which he demonstrated unwavering commitment and skill.

Beyond his responsibilities at CNR, Bill was deeply involved in his union, the United Transportation Union (UTU). His dedication to his fellow workers was evident in his 30-year tenure as Treasurer and his position as Local Chairman. Furthermore, for over a decade, he served as the Canadian Auditor for Canada for both CN and CP within the UTU. Bill earned immense respect and admiration from his peers and union brothers and sisters for his integrity and tireless advocacy.

To his children, Leila, Twila (Jeff), and Corey (Coral), Bill was more than just a father; he was their anchor, their voice of reason, and their unwavering support. He was also a loving grandfather to Braeden. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Dance, but is survived by his aunts, Irene Ricord and Margaret Dance, along with numerous cousins who will all cherish his memory.

Bill’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He was the bedrock of his family, a guiding presence whose wisdom and love shaped their lives. As his family eloquently expressed, “Dad, you were our rock, our sound mind, and our voice of reason. You were always there for us whenever we needed you.” His absence will be deeply felt, yet his spirit will remain a guiding force for his loved ones.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, located at 500 Lagimodiere Blvd. Rev. Bill Oakley will officiate the service, followed by a reception for family and friends.

The Dance family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Winnipeg Police Services and Fire and Paramedic Services for their compassionate support during this difficult time.

In remembrance of Bill’s life, the family suggests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of personal choice, in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements entrusted to GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME.
