The Joy of Dancing with My Eyes Closed: Finding Freedom and Focus on the Dance Floor

You’ve probably heard the old saying, “Dance like no one is watching.” But have you ever truly danced like no one is watching by closing your eyes? I often find myself Dancing With My Eyes Closed, and there are a few key reasons why this practice elevates the experience for me.

Firstly, closing my eyes sharpens my focus on the music. It’s as if shutting out visual distractions amplifies the auditory landscape, allowing me to become more deeply immersed in the rhythm and melodies. This heightened focus transforms dancing into a form of meditation, where the music guides my movements and thoughts fade away.

Secondly, dancing with my eyes closed helps me achieve a state of “trance.” It’s about letting go of inhibitions and moving purely on instinct. When you remove the visual input, you’re less likely to overthink your steps or worry about how you look. This surrender to the music and movement allows for a more authentic and unrestrained dance experience.

Finally, in social settings, closing my eyes becomes a sanctuary from self-consciousness. It eliminates the potential distractions of observing others or feeling observed. Suddenly, it doesn’t matter who is around or what they might think. My attention is entirely inward, focused on my own expression and enjoyment of the dance.

A common concern about dancing with eyes closed is navigating the space around you. Surprisingly, I’ve discovered an almost intuitive sense of spatial awareness emerges. When you are truly connected to the music and your body is moving freely, it’s like you develop a sixth sense for obstacles and people. I’ve often danced in my living room, seemingly lost in my own world, without bumping into furniture or tripping – much to the amazement of onlookers who sometimes describe my dance as a ‘crazy shaman’.

So, I’m curious, can anyone relate to this experience? Do you know the feeling of losing yourself in dance with your eyes closed, and is it something you prefer?

Love and light to you all.
