Empowering Voices: A Journey for Modern Dance Dancers

Dance has always been an intrinsic part of my life. From childhood recitals filled with sparkly costumes and the thrill of performance, dance was more than just movement; it was a passion. However, as I matured within the dance world, a stark reality emerged. My identity as a Black dancer subtly influenced perceptions of my capabilities, dictated by those in positions of authority. This prejudice cast a shadow over my love for dance, threatening to dim the very joy it ignited within me.

Despite these challenges, my determination remained unwavering. Acceptance into the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance marked a significant step forward. Ironically, a knee injury during my first semester became an unexpected catalyst for growth. Unable to physically dance, I immersed myself in the conservatory’s library, devouring the history of modern dance. Through reading and research, I encountered the pioneers of this art form, and a profound realization took hold. Modern dance, I discovered, was a distinctly American art form, as significant as jazz or rock and roll. This revelation sparked a sense of patriotism and a powerful urge to contribute to this legacy, a legacy I had previously been led to believe was not meant for me.

This understanding of modern dance as a cultural birthright, rather than mere entertainment, liberated me. It granted me permission to embrace my complete self within the art form. My Black identity, my womanhood, my individuality – every facet of who I am became a source of freedom, enriching my artistry. Transitioning from dancer to educator, this epiphany now guides my approach to teaching. I strive to empower my Modern Dance Dancers to infuse their own unique cultures and complete selves into their practice. With twenty-five years of experience, the essence of dance has transformed for me. Now, dance embodies wholeness, expansion, joy, and profound pride.

Dance is the embodiment of power. My aspiration is for the next generation of modern dance dancers to begin their journey where I have arrived: with the inherent knowledge that our art form empowers us to recognize our significance and our rightful place within it.
