Like many, the idea of working out used to fill me with dread. Years of compulsory track and field and cross country in high school left me associating exercise with grueling drills rather than enjoyment. The annual fitness tests in gym class were something to be endured, not embraced. I entered college fully expecting to continue avoiding workouts at all costs. However, life has a funny way of changing your perspectives, and mine shifted dramatically thanks to something completely unexpected: pole dancing.
During a winter break micro-internship, I found myself with more free time than anticipated. Searching for something new and exciting to fill those hours, I stumbled upon a local Circus and Aerial Arts school. Intrigued, I signed up for a few classes. When I saw “pole dance classes” on the schedule for Monday, on a whim, I added my name to the list.
As Sunday approached, a wave of doubt washed over me. What had I been thinking? My dance experience was limited to childhood ballet lessons over a decade prior. Flexibility and strength? Definitely not my strong suits. The idea of feeling confident and graceful, let alone sexy, felt utterly foreign. Even before stepping into the studio, I was tempted to cancel.
But I went. And it changed everything. That first pole dance class was a revelation. I discovered an incredibly supportive and inclusive environment, a vibrant community of fellow dancers, and, most surprisingly, a workout I genuinely loved. Unlike other aerial arts I had briefly experimented with, pole dancing felt accessible right from the start. Even as a complete beginner, I was learning impressive-looking moves almost immediately. For the rest of that winter break, I was hooked, practicing at the studio every single day.
Returning to college, I was disappointed to find that the nearest pole studio was a considerable distance away and inaccessible without a car. I resigned myself to putting pole dancing on hold until the summer, assuming I wouldn’t be consumed by work.
Fate intervened in the form of a casual mention at a circus club meeting. Our president, Zoe, mentioned that OBurlesque was getting a dance pole and that it would be accessible to club members. Weeks later, a stage pole was erected in the college gymnasium. I was ecstatic. Returning to the pole reignited my passion. Just like at the studio, I quickly connected with other pole dancers, learning from their experience and sharing the joy of movement.
Towards the end of the year, the outgoing “Pole Officer” of OBurlesque asked if I would consider nominating myself for the position. Despite my initial nerves, I took the leap and joined the OBurlesque Board. It was an incredible opportunity to become part of one of the most welcoming and spirited student organizations on campus.

Since then, as Pole Officer, I’ve built a newsletter reaching over 100 students, led numerous training sessions, and hosted beginner pole classes that consistently attract a fantastic turnout. I even had the chance to perform pole dance in a circus showcase, directly challenging outdated stereotypes and introducing a dynamic new element to our performances. An upcoming collaborative performance between OBurlesque and OCircus in December has me buzzing with excitement (and a touch of nerves!).
What I truly love about pole dancing is the opportunity to introduce it to others, to dismantle misconceptions, and to foster both athleticism and sensuality within a welcoming and beginner-friendly dance form. My involvement with Obie Pole has been transformative, completely reshaping my perception of exercise. Now, I actually choose to do crunches and push-ups, fueled by the desire to improve my pole skills. Stretching and arm workouts are no longer a chore, and even planks are becoming less daunting – all thanks to pole.
And the best part? Anyone can experience these benefits.
