Discovering the Rhythm of Manhattan: Why We Love Dance with Huu Rock

Huu Rock is more than just a dancer; he embodies the vibrant energy of the Manhattan dance scene. As a dancer, instructor, choreographer, and DJ, he is a cornerstone of movement culture and Co-Founder of MELLOW ANIMALS, a dynamic dance crew known for its mastery of diverse street dance styles. For anyone who says “I Love Dance Manhattan,” Huu Rock’s journey is a testament to that passion.

His dance story began in Kochi, Japan, where he started b-boying and became part of the celebrated Spin Crew. However, it was upon arriving in New York City that Huu Rock truly immersed himself in the expansive world of dance. The city’s diverse styles, music, and encompassing culture captivated him, igniting a deep love for all that dance in NYC represents. This is where his “i love dance manhattan” story truly began to unfold.

During this pivotal time, Huu Rock connected with his mentor, Ejoe Wilson, and joined Beyond Phenomenon. He continued to refine his unique style by absorbing the techniques of legendary dancers like Tone McGregor, Sekou Heru, Marjory Smarth, and many others at parties and social dance gatherings. These experiences solidified his foundation and broadened his understanding of dance in Manhattan.

Driven by his passion, Huu Rock launched Hiphop Wednesdays in 2013, followed by House Mondays in 2016. These open format dance sessions became crucial platforms for dancers of all levels to connect, practice, and share their love for dance. Further expanding his impact, MELLOW ANIMALS was established in 2014 with fellow dancer, Riceball, and together they created Battle 101, a popular all-styles dance battle.

From his early days battling on the streets and dancing in clubs, Huu Rock has broadened his reach to teaching, television appearances, music videos, and stage performances. Through all his endeavors, Huu Rock aims to inspire others to discover their own artistic voice, just as his mentors inspired him. His dedication truly reflects why so many say, “i love dance manhattan,” and appreciate the artists who fuel its vibrant pulse.
