Discover the Joy and Empowerment of Pole Dance Classes

I used to dread workouts. For years, forced fitness in school left me with a deep aversion to exercise. The required runs, push-up tests, and gym class drills solidified my resolve to avoid working out at all costs after graduation. College, however, had a surprising plot twist in store for my fitness philosophy.

During a college break, seeking something new to fill my free time, I spontaneously signed up for classes at a local Circus and Aerial Arts school. Among the intriguing options, “Pole Dance Classes” stood out. On a whim, I enrolled.

As the class date approached, my initial impulsiveness morphed into apprehension. Doubt crept in. What had I been thinking? Ballet lessons from over a decade ago hardly qualified as relevant dance experience. Flexibility and strength? Definitely not my strong suits. The idea of feeling confident, let alone sexy, in a dance class seemed laughable. Pre-class jitters almost convinced me to back out completely.

Despite the rising panic, I decided to go. That single decision proved to be transformative. Stepping into that dance studio opened up a world I never expected. I found welcoming instructors, a supportive and fun-loving community of fellow dancers, and, most importantly, a workout I genuinely enjoyed. Unlike other aerial apparatuses I had briefly experimented with, pole dance felt accessible right from the beginning. Even as a complete novice, I was learning impressive-looking moves almost immediately. For the rest of that college break, I was hooked, dedicating myself to daily pole practice at the studio.

Returning to college, I faced a dilemma: the nearest pole studio was inconveniently far, and without a car, continuing my newfound passion seemed impossible. I resigned myself to putting pole dance on hold, maybe revisiting it during the summer break if life allowed.

Then, serendipity struck. At a campus club meeting, a casual mention sparked hope. The club was getting a dance pole! Weeks later, a stage pole materialized in the campus gym. I was ecstatic. Returning to the pole reignited my passion, and just like at the studio, I quickly connected with other pole enthusiasts, learning and growing together.

An unexpected opportunity arose at the end of the year. The current Pole Officer was stepping down and suggested I consider nominating myself for the role. Nervous but intrigued, I put my name forward and became part of the club’s leadership team. It was an incredible experience to be part of such a vibrant and encouraging student organization.

Since then, I’ve channeled my enthusiasm into building a community around pole dance. I created a newsletter to connect with interested students, led numerous introductory sessions, and hosted beginner pole dance classes that consistently draw a crowd. Performing pole dance in a campus showcase was a highlight, allowing me to challenge stereotypes and introduce this captivating art form to a wider audience. An upcoming collaboration performance promises to be even more exciting.

What I love most is sharing the joy of pole dance with others, breaking down preconceived notions, and promoting athleticism and sensuality within a supportive and beginner-friendly environment. My involvement with pole dance has fundamentally shifted my perspective on exercise. Now, I actually choose to do strength exercises, motivated by the desire to improve my pole skills. Stretching, planks, even arm workouts – they’ve all become less of a chore and more of a means to an end, thanks to pole.

And the best part? Pole dance is truly for everyone.
