He is also survived by his son-in-law Michiel Vandeven, his grandchildren Halle Tubergen, Ian Pedersen, Hannah Pedersen, Shelby Pedersen, Malayla Garcia, and his great-granddaughter Scarlett Holden. Peter will also be missed by his sister-in-law Ruth Smith-Cook, nephew Jay Cook, niece Robin Cook-Slater, her husband Kirk Slater, and their children Christian Slater, Arianna and Karl Slater-Grimm.
A Life Well-Lived, Filled with Adventures and Dancing Polka
Peter’s life was truly remarkable. Born in Chicago, he experienced a significant part of his childhood in Germany, his father’s homeland, enduring the hardships of World War II before returning to Saugatuck, Michigan, at the age of nine. Saugatuck became the backdrop for his youth, where he embraced local life, from rowing the ferry during summers to contributing to local law enforcement.
His sense of duty led him to serve in the Army for two years, including a period back in Germany. Upon his return to Saugatuck, he married Judy, a local sweetheart, and they established their roots, becoming long-time residents. Their home was a hub of joy and celebration, famous for hosting epic “Dancing Polka parties.” These gatherings were legendary, filled with the infectious rhythms of polka music, often featuring Peter himself on the accordion, showcasing one of his many talents, and complemented by his homemade beer. Beyond the lively parties, Peter and his family found joy in the tranquility of boating and sailing on Silver Lake and Lake Michigan.
From Boilers to Birdwatching: Exploring Peter’s Passions Beyond Dancing Polka
For the majority of his career, Peter dedicated his skills to Vierson Boiler in Grand Rapids, working as a welder and boiler installer. Retirement opened a new chapter, and he and Judy spent many wonderful years in Pine Island, Bokeelia, Florida, before returning to Holland, Michigan.
Peter was a man of diverse interests and talents that extended far beyond his love for dancing polka. He was a passionate gardener, transforming every property he owned into a beautiful landscape. In his younger days, he held a pilot’s license, reflecting his adventurous spirit. His fascination with world history provided him with endless intellectual exploration. He skillfully crafted beautiful ship replicas, demonstrating his meticulous nature and artistic eye. Travel was another avenue for his curiosity and love of discovery. An avid photographer, Peter also dedicated countless hours to learning about and observing birds, appreciating the natural world around him. As Judy fondly recalls, “He never met a hobby he didn’t like!”
A Legacy of Love for Animals and the Joy of Dancing Polka
Peter’s love extended to all animals, a deep respect he instilled in his children. He was never without a loyal canine companion by his side. In remembrance of Peter’s life and his compassionate spirit, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to Harbor Humane Society in West Olive. A private service to celebrate Peter’s life will be held later this year.
In the words of Van Morrison, capturing the essence of Peter’s adventurous soul:
“Hark, now hear the sailors cry,
Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
Let your soul and spirit fly,
into the mystic, into the mystic”.
